Lewis Norfleet serves as Director of Bands at Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, Oregon, where he leads a program that includes three concert bands, four jazz bands, percussion ensemble, color guard, and the 200-member Grants Pass High School Marching Band. He is a graduate of Grants Pass High School and proudly works alongside his wife and fellow GPHS band director, Noreen Norfleet. Since returning home to teach at his alma mater in 2020, Norfleet has received the 2021 National Federation of High Schools Heart of the Arts Award, was named the Director Who Makes a Difference for the state of Oregon in 2022 by School Band and Orchestra Magazine, and received a Citation of Merit for Marching Excellence from the National Band Association in 2023. The Grants Pass High School bands have toured nationally and internationally, including an appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and performance tours to Japan in 2024 and 2027.
 

     Lewis has taught at the secondary and collegiate levels for over 30 years. His high school programs in Oregon and Washington performed at several regional and national conferences, were recognized as Oregon State Concert Band Champions, were eight-time Northwest Marching Band Champions, and were twice named a Grammy Foundation Signature School. His collegiate experience includes appointments as Director of Bands at Central Washington University and Director of Athletic Bands / Assistant Director of Bands at Oregon State University. Norfleet’s ensembles have performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, College Band Directors National Association Regional Conference, Western International Band Clinic, and National Association for Music Education state and regional conferences.

     Lewis began working as an educator and designer in the marching arts after being a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps and has composed and arranged hundreds of works for marching band, concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble and various chamber ensembles. While most have been privately commissioned, some of his music has been published by Tapspace Publications, Matrix Publishing, Jalen Publishing, Marching Monk, Center X Productions, and Marching Show Concepts. He currently serves as a designer for ensembles across the United States and Japan and is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician for concert and marching festivals throughout the country. His works have been performed by DCI World Class finalists, BOA Grand National finalists, Japan Marching Band gold medalists, UIL (Texas) state finalists, and numerous state champions around the country.

     Lewis did his doctoral studies in instrumental conducting at the University of Washington where he studied with Timothy Salzman. He is an alumnus of the University of Oregon where he studied music education and graduated with honors. He is a member of the Oregon Music Educators Association, Oregon Band Directors Association, Western Bands Association, National Band Association, and is a Conn-Selmer Educational Clinician.

Lewis is an avid whitewater rafter and enjoys living with his family on the banks of the Rogue River nestled in the beautiful Klamath mountains of southern Oregon.
